INTACS, is a procedure for reducing a mild degree of myopia and is being studied for reducing both hyperopia and astigmatism. INTAC inserts are an alternative to laser surgery. INTAC inserts are tiny, crescent-shaped prescription material made of plastic polymer. The inserts are implanted in the periphery of the cornea during a surgery process. They are usually not noticeable and require no maintenance like contacts. The effect they have is to flatten the cornea for better focusing and providing crisp vision. INTAC inserts can be removed and replaced if a need for prescription changes. Removal of INTAC inserts causes vision to regress to the condition they were before the insertion of INTACs.

Dr. William Boothe => As we age, the lens of the eyes becomes rigid, loses its flexibility, and thus its ability to focus as well. The exact cause of presbyopia is still under research and debate. One theory is that the fibers in the lens become stiffened and are unable to change shape as well. Another theory is that the lens grows too big and is not able to change shape as well. Other factors such as trauma, occupation, and lifestyle may be factors as well.
Newer allergy eye-drop preparations: Recently, new classes of eye drops for the treatment of itching due to allergy have become available over the counter. Zaditor, a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drop, is an example of these.

Anterior Ocular Segment - A name for the parts of the eye that are in front of the lens, namely, the cornea, anterior chamber, iris and ciliary body
The inner sides of the eyelids, which touch the front surface of surface of the eye, are covered by a thin membrane (the palpebral conjunctiva) that produces mucus to lubricate the eye. This thin membrane folds back on itself and covers the visible sclera of the eyeball. (This continuation of the palpebral conjunctiva is called the bulbar conjunctiva.) Natural oil for the tears is produced by tiny glands located at the edges of the eyelids, providing additional lubrication for the eye. LASIK DALLAS - Dr William Boothe => Flying Spot - A method of applying the excimer laser light used in refractive surgery. A flying spot laser is used, which has a 1mm - 2mm diameter light beam. The computer that controls the laser is programmed to send pulses to changing spots on the cornea, with no spots overlapping. Part of the ophthalmic laser system is an eye tracker, which responds to all eye movement during surgery. So even if the eye moves while it’s being treated, the entire targeted area will be treated, because the treatment plan has determined where the laser should shine, in the series of flying spots that will cover it entirely, and the whole system moves to correspond with any eye movements during surgery.

Dr William A. Boothe => To correct astigmatism contacts called toric, can be specially designed for people with astigmatism. Minor degrees of astigmatism can be corrected with soft toric lenses. High degrees of astigmatism are better corrected with eyeglasses or RGP toric contact lenses. Toric contact lenses are more expensive than normal contacts because of the extra correction provided on them. Surgical treatments for astigmatism include LASIK Eye Surgery (Laser in-situ keratomileusis) and CK (Conductive keratoplasty) for people over 40, Astigmatic Keratotomy (AK), and Orthokeratology. LASIK reshapes the cornea by removing tissue. In Astigmatic Keratotomy, an older treatment, an eye care surgeon places incisions in the periphery of the cornea to change its shape for better vision. Orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, uses RGP contact lenses to gradually reshape the cornea. The reshaping of the cornea is not permanent however and the special contact lenses will still be worn a few hours a day to keep the new shape. Only minor degrees of astigmatism are best treated with this method. The correction of astigmatism is constantly being researched. New advances in materials and technology will greatly help people with astigmatism see clearly again.
If you notice words looking blurry on a page, a dark or empty area in the center of your vision, or crookedness of straight lines, you may have symptoms of macular degeneration. You may lose vision in one eye but be able to see well out of the other eye. You will notice central vision problems more quickly if both eyes have macular degeneration.

Corneal Refractive Therapy - A reshaping of the eye with contact lenses, also called Orthokeratology. These lenses are rigid and worn while you sleep, so they gently persuade the eye to change its shape by the time you wake in the morning. The effect lasts only a day or two, so you need to wear these lenses every night. It was approved by the FDA in June, 2002 and is a non-surgical way of temporarily creating the effect created permanently by LASIK surgery
These aberrations include starbursts, ghosting, halos, double vision, and a number of other post-operative complications listed belowConcern has long plagued the tendency of refractive surgeries to induce higher-order aberration not correctable by traditional contacts or glasses. The advancement of LASIK technique and technologies has helped reduce the risk of clinically significant visual impairment after the surgery. One of the major discoveries was the correlation between pupil size and aberrations: Effectively, the larger the pupil size, the greater the risk of aberrations. This correlation is the result of the irregularity between the untouched part of the cornea and the reshaped part. Daytime post-lasik vision is optimal, since the pupil is smaller than the LASIK flap. But at night, the pupil may expand such that light passes through the edge of the LASIK flap into the pupil which gives rise to many aberrations. Astigmatism is caused by an irregular shape of the cornea. In astigmatism, the cornea is shaped more like a football, an oval shape, than the normal round shape like a baseball. This irregular shape causes two images to be focused. A slight amount of astigmatism is normal in many people and does not require correction. Astigmatism is usually present since birth and generally worsens as we age.
Ortho-K and CRT are both more costly at startup than normal contact lenses and eyeglasses. However after the initial correction retainer contacts to keep the cornea the same shape generally cost around $100 to $200 a pair. Typically cost will range from $900 to $1800 with two sets of lenses and fittings. Microkeratome - (My-krow-KEH-ruh-tome) A surgical instrument used to create a corneal flap during LASIK and some other refractive surgeries. There are two types: mechanical and laser. The mechanical microkeratome uses an extremely sharp and precise metal blade. The femtosecond laser microkeratome uses the laser beam to create microscopically tiny bubbles at a specific depth in the cornea. Astigmatism - (uh-STIG-muh-tiz-um) An eye condition where the cornea is oval-shaped rather than round. This oval shape has two curves: the steeper one and the flatter one. Each curve refracts light at a different angle, sending it to focus on the retina in two different places, and creating distorted vision. It can be mild, with just blurriness, or more severe, with ghosting and severe blurring. In a glasses prescription, the second number expresses the degree of astigmatism you have, and the next number is the number of degrees in the angle of refraction. DR. BOOTHE A. - EYE SURGERY => Wavefront technology is major advance in LASIK laser eye surgery, especially for people who have complicated prescriptions. It may sound a bit funny, but your eyes are like your feet. Shoes usually just come in sizes that measure how long the feet are. With normal LASIK surgery, vision correction is measured by the visual acuity of a person, 20/20, 20/40, 20/100 and how it is altered by the refraction of their eye. This method corrects how much a person can see but not the details of everything else. Imagine if shoes were made exactly for your feet by measuring how wide, how long, comfort level, arch, and so on. The result would be a great pair of shoes that fit perfectly. Wavefront technology does this for the eyes by measuring the whole eye and providing a three-dimensional corneal map. All abnormalities and irregularities, called optical aberrations, from front to back are present in this map and allow the eye surgeon to correct your vision to a “perfect fit". This allows correction for not only nearsightedness or farsightedness and astigmatism and its impact on visual acuity, but also for other aberrations that can affect contrast sensitivity, night vision, depth perception, and light sensitivity. By correcting all these factors, each individual’s vision can be improved dramatically by correcting for the individual’s specific problems.
Secondary Implant - In some cataract surgeries, the crystalline lens is not replaced. It can be replaced later with an intraocular lens, in a secondary implant procedure.

Hyperosmotics: Hyperosmotics are used to treat corneal swelling. Hyperosmotics draw water out of the cornea and thus reduce corneal swelling. Most OTC hyperosmotics contain sodium chloride in various concentrations as either a solution or an ointment. The 2% solution tends to cause less stinging and burning than the 5% solution. An example of a hyperosmotic for corneal swelling is Adsorbonac.
